Do you want to create a better future for young people across the north east?
Would you like to make a difference with local communities?
Could you commit to giving something back to the education sector?
NEAT Academy Trust is a multi-academy trust of six schools across Tyneside and Teesside providing for 2-19 year olds within both Church of England and non-Church schools. We are a charitable organisation with an ambitious vision for the next five years of our journey, supported by the values that are at the heart of our trust. Our workforce of 450 staff is passionate and committed to delivering the best education experience possible for all of our 3,200 pupils.
We are seeking to appoint three non-executive directors to our Trust Board, who are also trustees of the charitable company. Working as a team with complementary skills and experience, the Board works with the executive leaders to shape the strategic direction of the trust, provides independent scrutiny and evaluation of its performance, has oversight of our £23 million budget and ensures there is effective engagement with, and accountability to, our stakeholders.
You will share our values and support our drive for continuous improvement. Able to see the big picture and think strategically, you will demonstrate independent judgment and be able to build strong working relationships within the board and with the trust’s CEO and senior leaders.
Experience of living in, working in/with or connection with the communities that the trust’s schools serve, which are currently in the NE6 area of Newcastle upon Tyne and Hartlepool, or a strong interest in developing this insight are important to us. We are keen to ensure that at least one of our new appointments has strong connections with Teesside to help us further develop our knowledge and build our networks in the area.
Role 1 – Finance skillset: Specialist expertise in strategic financial planning and accounting including sustainable growth, accountability for multi-million budgets and/or external audit. This appointment will also join the trust board’s Audit and Risk Committee.
Role 2 – Legal skillset: Legal expertise at partner or senior solicitor level which includes, for example, corporate, charity or regulatory compliance, education, employment or complex contractual management.
Role 3 – Education skillset: Experience of education management or governance, ideally of a multi-site operation, gained through, for example, involvement in a multi-academy trust, federation of maintained schools, local authority and/or further education.
Commitment is 2 days per month which includes time to read through documentation – board meetings are early evening (6pm onwards) and committee meetings are flexible and can be 5-6pm before a board meeting – 3 or 4 of these per year. All meetings have been virtual over the last 16 months and we’ll continue to do this going forwards plus there will be some meetings on site in the future. Dates are mapped out in advance so they are easy to manage.
